Our two day offshore tournament is over and the results are in, Fishing Stunk. No I take that back, fishing was good, catching stunk. (unless you were a junior angler) As captain I made a call for our team to have a chance at catching the biggest offshore fish that I had heard of recently, I decided to run to the Dumping Grounds 108 miles offshore where they had been getting 40 to 80 lb bluefin. Before we arrived at our spot at 6am to start fishing one crewmember had already gotten sick running the boat at night in what was reported as 5' at 8 seconds seas but felt much worse. We trolled for hours in a fishless and baitless zone until we threw in the towel and ran for San Clemente to try and save the trip. Luckily the weather got better the more we travelled as we had over 65 miles to go to San Clemente.
Once we arrived at San Clemente we anchored up in Pyramid for a much needed dinner, then the plan was to fish Seabass all night. Unfortunately nobody could wake up the captain (me) so we sat in Pyramid until early morning and ran around to the lee side to find some yellowtail. After catching a lot of large bass, and busted off a few black seabass (which were attacking our bonita like seals) we ended the day with a giant 3.4lb Bonita for over 250 miles of fishing.
Lucky for us fishing was equally bad for the other boats in the tournament and we ended up taking second place.
The results are:
The Real Winner Miles Bardin on China Girl (Junior Angler) with a 19.9 lb yellowtail
1st place Dan Smith on Reel Nice & Easy with a 3.6 lb Bonita
2nd Place Bub Beswick on Rickdiculous with a 3.5 lb Bonita
3rd place John Thalasinos on Reel Nice & Easy with a 3.5 lb Bonita
4th place Brent Thalasinos on Reel Nice & Easy with a 3.5 lb Bonita
5th Place Jim Dragoo on Rickdiculous with a 3.4 lb Bonita |
